Andrew and I have had chickens on the brain for the last few weeks and when he found a neat coop (chicken tractor) design, and we got to okay from our awesome landlady, we began devising our plan. *Okay, so I was going to say "hatching" our plan, but didn't want to make y'all gag. ;)
Thursday night we decided to meet at the Farm Supply store in town and scope out our prospective little tenants. They were SO cute, but whilst standing before the stock tank full of yellow balls of fluff peeping at us, reality set in. We would be gone for the weekend. Who would watch them? What if the heat lamp burst and set something on fire? What if...what if... Both our minds were racing, because we both were dying to get chicks RIGHT THEN! Andrew is usually the one talking or calming me down, but this time the roles seemed a bit reversed. I was the one mentioning all the (no-fun) facts of why it'd be better to wait a few days before becoming chicken farmers. It wasn't until my honey picked one up, and we scratched it's fuzzy head that we made peace with the idea.
Yesterday, on our return home, we stopped at the store only to find cold, empty bins where life had been just a few days before. As I'd been grinning from ear to ear all the way to the store (and making Andrew laugh at my excitement), seeing the empty stock-tanks was quite saddening. I mentioned something to the effect of feeling like we were in front of a grave w/ the chicks gone and the heat lamps off. The clerk up front told us that they weren't expecting a shipment for a few more days, maybe up to a week. After believing ourselves to have been quite patient waiting those few days, it was a real bummer moment. :-p This morning I am making calls around town to local feed stores to see if they have birdies, and what kind. We're looking for pullets (girlie birdies) that will be good egg layers, as well as for meat (if at some point we decide we can part with them enough to serve them on the dinner table).
I'm REALLY hoping we can find our feathered friends this week. If we do, I'll be sure to let y'all know!!!
